Free of charge counseling for survivors of DV
Court advocates who educate, support and accompany children and their non-offending family members as they prepare for the court process.
Youth and adolescents ages 6-18 can begin their healing journey with trained counselors and advocates in supportive individual and group settings. School-based counseling is also available through our community partnerships.
This program provides financial coaching, matched savings, financial empowerment group training, and career readiness services onsite at our emergency housing.
To promote economic stability and independence, HAWC’s Career Development Program helps clients identify and work towards educational goals and/or employment. Services include skills assessment, training, career planning and financial assistance for education.
Counseling Services:
Free, confidential counseling services for adult survivors and their adolescent children (12 and older), safety planning, emergency financial support, and help with education or training (Harris County only)
Domestic Violence Victim Support Groups:
Process groups or a 10-session psychoeducational support group. AVDA’s groups teach participants about the dynamics of domestic abuse as well as the significant consequences of children’s exposure to an abusive environment. Participants of the 10-session psychoeducational support group may qualify for a certificate. Groups are offered in English and Spanish. Contact AVDA at (713) 224-9911 to ask about these groups.
Legal Aid
AVDA attorney/paralegal teams provide legal representation for protective orders, divorce, child support, child custody and adoption.
Financial Assistance
Funds are available for emergency shelter, food, transportation, education, training and more.

Aids in cognitive functioning
Child Mentors are at Rio Bend and the Emergency Shelter which offers PlayCare for the younger children when survivor parents need time to work on themselves. Child Mentor staff also provides homework assistance, school supplies if needed, assistance with making transportation arrangements with the school, and even accompanying parents to school meetings (with consent) to discuss a child's special needs if necessary.
The Life Skills program provides one-on-one adult mentorship and group work for survivors to help empower them to deal with life events and experiences, with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency.
Classes include expressive dance, exercise courses and more.
The Employment Program helps expand employment readiness through a 5-week career development series that prepares you with interviewing skills, how to dress the part, building your resume, maintaining employment, and professional mock interviews. A certificate is received at the end of the series that can be included on your resume. Mentors assist with identifying job leads and referrals to job placement services.
Short- and long-term housing assistance as well as ancillary services for qualified applicants. All housing programs have a utility allowance built into the grant.
We strive to represent clients of Fort Bend and surrounding counties, who are experiencing high conflict divorces and custody cases and who may have difficulty receiving affordable legal services through another agency. We also assist in protective orders, criminal investigations, landlord tenant matters, legal consultations, and court accompaniments.
