Sometimes the offer is not exactly what we were expecting or need to maintain self-sufficiency.  When negotiating for more compensation, be sure to include non-salary compensation such as benefits, parking, meals, tuition reimbursement, gym memberships and other perks.

You want to calculate how much your take home pay will be and then how much you will need to spend to cover those perks.  For example, if you were going to receive $1,000 a month in gross salary and the company was going to cover your health insurance from company A.   Company B would pay $1100 a month, but you have to contribute $150 a month to your health insurance, company A would provide more take home pay.

If you negotiate, be polite and understand a company may say no because the higher salary is not in their budget.
