Jewish Values

Jewish Family Service Houston has articulated, among the rich treasures of Jewish teachings, a number of values that are the underpinnings of the work we do.

While Jewish values inspire us to serve the community, JFS Houston is committed to serving people of all faiths and backgrounds. Consistent with the ethical standards of the social work profession as well as Jewish custom, JFS does not participate in proselytizing of any type to either Jewish or non-Jewish clients.

The vast majority of programs at JFS are operated within a completely secular framework. Programs which include elements of Jewish faith or tradition such as Celebration Company- which celebrates Jewish holidays as a part of their programming - or our Jewish Chaplaincy Program, disclose these elements in advance and work to accommodate everyone in way that is respectful of their personal values and beliefs.

We believe that many will find that the values listed below, while rooted in Jewish faith and tradition, are very similar to those of many different faiths and belief systems.

An overarching Jewish value is: Repairing the World (in Hebrew: Tikkun O’lam)

This means that we see ourselves as G-d’s partner in creating a better world by being actively concerned with the welfare of individuals and society.

The following concepts find focus in specific services and programs:

The imperative to heal the ill (Rofei Cholim: ) and care for the Body and Mind (Shmirat Haguf)

Behavioral and Mental Health Services; Velva G. and H. Fred Levine Jewish Chaplaincy Program; Hospice Support; Financial Assistance for Medical Needs and making Behavioral and Mental Health Services accessible for people of all incomes

The importance of honoring the elderly (Kibbud Z’keinim)

Coaching and Case Management Services: Senior Adults; Senior Outreach Programs: Friendly Visitors, Senior Chavurot Program, Music and Spirit Program

Righteousness reflected in providing tangible resources(Tzedakah)

Employment Services; Financial Stability

The imperative to strive for Peace (Rodeif Shalom)

Behavioral and Mental Health Services; Shalom Bayit: Domestic Abuse Prevention

Recognizing the inherent dignity of all people ( Mishane Habriyot)

Disability Services

The imperative to act, to be involved with others in making a difference (Al Tifros MinHatzibur)

Coaching and Case Management:Disaster Services; Community Outreach; Community Intervention

The following concepts relate to JFS’s commitment to outward community reach to many different communities as well as our continual commitment to the Jewish population of Greater Houston.

The Biblical reminders to welcome guests and be good to strangers (Hachnasat Orchim)

Serving the broader community and caring for all people in your environs who need help, no matter what faith of background

An obligation to love and care for our Jewish “family”(Kol Yisrael Aruvim Zeh B’Zeh)

Serving the Jewish community and an imperative to set up organized systems, such as JFS, to provide these resources
