Today's column by Chirag Patel demonstrates how stress can help us develop a growth mindset, helping us during times of struggle and hardship.

Stress is a fascinating part of our human existence and our experiences. Often, we develop a mindset that stress is bad and should be avoided. This is not completely true; we humans have learned to live with stress. We have learned to allow stress to motivate us. This motivation allows us to develop a growth mindset.

A growth mindset allows us to stretch our mental abilities during times of struggle and hardship. We constantly are reinventing ourselves, day to day. These reinventions, or rebirths, are forged through experiences which require us to be present for the teachable moments.

Chirag Patel is a clinical social work intern student at Alexander Jewish Family Service. He is working on his master’s degree at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Patel is interested in serving individuals who have been impacted by emotional and physical trauma. He also is a faculty member at San Jacinto College, within the Psychology Department. He has enjoyed practicing Krav Maga for the last eight years. His favorite people in the world are his wife and baby boy.
