It is often easier to see problems when children are young. And, most parents know exactly what to do to help.

But when a child becomes a teenager, there can be a whole new world of problems. Between the ages of 12 and 18, everything changes. It’s a time when social, peer, academic and parental pressures combine with emotional and biological changes. The results can be both exhilarating and overwhelming.

There are warning signs that may indicate a need for professional help.

Reasons for parents to call JFS may include:

  • Mood swings
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Loss of interest
  • Secretiveness
  • School decline
  • Change in dress habits
  • Destructiveness
  • Anger and rage
  • Feelings of hopelessness

The Process

Parents see these disturbing signs and do not know what to do. However, there is someone you can turn to. Our professional counselors are among the best in their field. They work with children and teens every day, helping them with issues such as family power struggles, depression, body image issues, anger management, behavior problems, and self-esteem issues. Jewish Family Service provides a safe and confidential place for the adolescent to talk about whatever is on their minds. Jewish Family Service also has a program designed for the teen years, 15 to 18, "Let it Out!", which gives the youngsters an opportunity to discuss, with other teens, any issue or subject they wish to discuss.
